What book?
“Think And Grow Rich”, written by Napoleon Hill, is one of the greatest books in the world in my eyes. It was for the first time published in March 1937 during the Great Depression. It has sold more than 60 million copies and still sells. Why is this book so successful?
Dr. Hill’s “Think And Grow Rich” is not just an ordinary finance self-help book, it is not a get rich quick scheme or make money fast system. It is a profound manual for personal success and has helped to produce uncounted amounts of millionaires during the last 70+ years.
“Think And Grow Rich” is not about making money and gaining other material riches alone. It is also about love, care, friendship and happiness. It’s about human traits and about evolving in life. It’s about using your own mind and acting upon it. And…
- It is one of the earliest products of the modern genre of personal-success literature
- It is one of the best selling books of all time
- It has sold more than 60 million copies (according to the Napoleon Hill Foundation)
- It has been selling for over 70 years
- “Think And Grow Rich” is founded on “The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons” which was the result of interviews and analysis of hundreds of wealthy men and women, most of them millionaires or multimillionaires
- It was endorsed by Mahatma Gandhi and widely distributed throughout India of his time

Think and grow rich versus think and stay rich
Newsboy in Iowa City, Iowa, 1940, by Arthur Rothstein
Have you ever heard about anybody who lost a friend he had lent money to? In his famous book „Think and Grow Rich“, Napoleon Hill tells the story of a young paperboy who borrowed money for his own little newspaper business. In the chapter „Desire – The Starting Point of All Achievement“ in „Think and Grow Rich“ ist goes:
„He borrowed six cents in capital from the neighborhood shoemaker, invested it in papers, sold out, reinvested, and kept repeating until late in the evening. After balancing his accounts, and paying back the six cents he had borrowed from his banker, he had a net profit of forty-two cents.“In this case, the boy was able and willing to pay back his loan. But what if a friend does not pay back like in Alexa’s story. She lent $500.- to a friend who wanted to buy a car and needed money for the down payment. Unlike the paperboy in Napoleon Hill’s „Think and Grow Rich“ the story did not turn out so well.
