Edward Albert Filene

Edward Albert Filene

EDWARD ALBERT FILENE (September 3, 1860 in Salem, Massachusetts; † September 26, 1937 in Paris, France) was an American businessman, author and philanthropist. Due to his father’s ill health he had to give up his Harvard ambitions (he had already passed the entrance exams) to take over his family’s clothing business at the age of 19.  Even though Edward A. Filene had only little formal education, he became a retail genius and successfully developed the Filene’s department store chain. Filene also was a spiritual leader in the credit union movement, which he supported by public speeches and money. He planned and helped organize the Boston Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States and served in World War I as chairman of the War Shipping Committee. Edward A. Filene corresponded with many leaders in economy, politics and culture. Among them were Woodrow Wilson, Georges Clemenceau, Mahatma Gandhi and Lenin.

Napoleon Hill mentions Edward A. Filene in the list of millionaires  in “Think and Grow Rich”.

“What is needed is that the American masses shall learn the art of constructive self-government in this machine age (…)”
Edward A. Filene

Edwin C. Barnes

Edwin C. Barnes

EDWIN C. BARNES (* 1878 in Wisonsin, † September 23, 1952 in Bradenton, Florida) was an American inventor and electronic engineering specialist. He was Thomas A. Edison’s business partner from 1905 to Edison’s death in 1931. Edwin C. Barnes is “The Man Who “Thought” His Way Into Partnership With Thomas A. Edison”. Napoleon Hill tells Barnes’ story in the first chapter of “Think and Grow Rich”. It is the story of a man with a big burning and definite desire to become a business associate of Thomas Alva Edison. He had travelled by “blind baggage” on a freight train, because he did not have enough money to pay the fare. Edison gave him a chance and let him work in the office at first. Barnes saw his opportunity when Edison’s salesmen disregarded the Edison Dictating Machine (later: Ediphone). Barnes knew he could sell the machine and he did it so successfully that eventually Edison made him his business partner.

In “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill tells Edwin C. Barnes’ story in chapter 1 as “The man who “thought” his way into partnership with Thomas A. Edison”

“I came here to go into business with Edison, and I’ll accomplish this end if it takes the remainder of my life.”

Arthur Brisbane

Arthur Brisbane

ARTHUR BRISBANE (* December 12, 1864 in Buffalo, New York; † December 25, 1936 in New York City) was an American newspaper editor,  writer and real estate investor. Arthur Brisbane  started his career as a newspaper reporter in and editor in New York. He worked at The New York Sun and The New York World before he became editor of the New York Journal and the Evening Journal, owned by William Randolph Hearst. Arthur Brisbane was one of the most influential newspaper editors ever, since his syndicated editorial column reached a daily readership of over 20 million.

Arthur Brisbane is being mentioned by Napoleon Hill in “Think and Grow Rich” in the list of the author’s preface.

“If you don’t hit the reader between the eyes in your first sentence of your news column, there’s no need to write any more.”
Arthur Brisbane

Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson

THOMAS WOODROW WILSON (* December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia; † February 3, 1924 in Washington D.C.) was the 28th President of the United States of America from 1913 to 1921. President Wilson was the second democratic president since 1861. In the spirit of the progressive era, he established several social and economic reforms, e. g. the Federal Reserve Act, the Federal Trade Commission Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Farm Loan Act and America’s first-ever federal progressive income tax in the Revenue Act of 1913. Woodrow Wilson tried to keep the United States out of WW I, but had to declare war to Germany due to a threatening military alliance of Germany and Mexico and due to Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare. At the end of the war, President Wilson personally controlled negotiations with Germany and was mainly responsible for shaping the Treaty of Versailles. Based on this treaty,  the League of Nations, predecessor of the United Nations,  was created in 1919 and for this accomplishment, President Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919. President Woodrow Wilson is considered as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents.

Woodrow Wilson is being mentioned by Napoleon Hill in “Think and Grow Rich” as part of the list of users of the Carnegie secret.

“America lives in the heart of every man everywhere who wishes to find a region where he will be free to work out his destiny as he chooses.”
Woodrow Wilson

In this video, Napoleon Hill gives you a description of the rules of Accurate Thinking, “(…) which all successful people follow.”, he says.

He explains inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning and points out, that it is important to separate facts from fiction. The facts then are separated into 2 classes:

1. Important facts
2. Unimportant facts

Napoleon Hill tells a story of president Woodrow Wilson, for whom he had worked during world war I.
He replied to Mr. Hills question in an impressive 15-word speech.

Once, Napoleon Hill asked an old man for the time in a memorable episode of a man who could very well determine the unreliability of information.

Then Napoleon Hill gives you 7 rules for accurate thinking.

The Sixth Sense: The Door to the Temple of Wisdom – The Thirteenth Step toward Riches

“On scores of occasions, when I have faced emergencies, some of them so grave that my life was in jeopardy, I have been miraculously guided past these difficulties through the influence of my ‘Invisible Counselors.’”

Napoleon Hill

This is the 13th and last Step toward Riches in Napoleon Hill’s famous world bestseller “Think And Grow Rich”. Though it is not the book’s last chapter. Napoleon Hill calls this 13th Step toward Riches the “apex of the philosophy. It can be assimilated, understood, and applied ONLY by first mastering the other twelve principles.”

I am not sure, if I already master the other12 principles to get rich. But I like the this chapter anyway. The most entertaining, partly funny part is Mr. Hill’s description of “an imaginary Council meeting with this group whom I called my ‘Invisible Counselors.’”

Every night, over a long period of years, Napoleon Hill meets 9 men for an imaginary council:

  • Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • Luther Burbank
  • Napoleon Bonaparte
  • Andrew Carnegie
  • Henry Ford
  • Thomas A. Edison
  • Thomas Paine
  • Charles Darwin
  • Abraham Lincoln

Napoleon Hill reports: “My purpose was to rebuild my own character so it would represent a composite of the characters of my imaginary counselors.” He talked to his 9 imaginary guests naming their character traits and skills he would like to acquire by using his Sixth Sense.

For example: Mr. Hill wished “(…) the marvelous  understanding  of Nature which distinguished your life.” from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “(…) access to the knowledge which enabled you to make two blades of grass grow where but one grew before (…)” from Luther Burbank.

He asked from Abraham Lincoln “(…) the keen sense of justice, the untiring spirit of patience, the sense of humor, the human understanding, and the tolerance (…)” and addressed Andrew Carnegie “I wish to acquire a thorough understanding  of  the  principles  of  organized  effort,  which  you  used  so  effectively in the building of a great industrial enterprise.”

Over time, these 9 men developed individual characteristics.Abraham Lincoln was always late, walked slowly and rarely smiled, while Luther Burbank and Thomas Paine often seemed wanting to shock the other members of the cabinet , indulging in witty repartee.

Mr. Hill remembers: “On one occasion Burbank was late. When he came, he was excited with enthusiasm, and explained that he had been late, because of an experiment he was making, through which he hoped to be able to grow apples on any sort of tree.

“Paine chided him by reminding him that it was an apple which started all the trouble between man and woman. Darwin chuckled heartily as he suggested that Paine should watch out for little serpents, when he went into the forest to gather apples, as they had the habit of growing into big snakes. Emerson observed-”No serpents, no apples,” and Napoleon remarked, “No apples, no state!”

Napoleon Hill states, that he discontinued the meetings for several months. The Council had become so realistic, that he was afraid to lose sight of the imaginary Sixth Sense character of the meetings.

Later he added some new members to his Cabinet up to more than 50, among them Christ, St. Paul, Galileo, Copernicus, Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Homer, Voltaire, Bruno, Spinoza, Drummond, Kant, Schopenhauer,  Newton,  Confucius,  Elbert  Hubbard,  Brann,  Ingersol,  Wilson,  and  William James.

Napoleon Hill sees big advantages in this method of an imaginary Council. He says: “I now go to my imaginary counselors with every difficult problem which confronts me and my clients. The results are often astonishing, although I do not depend entirely on this Sixth Sense form of Counsel.”

The Mystery of Sex: Transmutation – The Tenth Step toward Riches

“Sex transmutation is simple and easily explained. It means the switching of the mind from thoughts of physical expression, to thoughts of some other nature.”

Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill considers sex desire as the most powerful of human desires. That’s why the exercise of will-power is necessary for the transmutation of sex energy. “But the reward is worth the effort”, says Dr. Hill.

This chapter is about utilizing the “irresistible force” of the emotion of sex and its super power for action in order to succeed and get rich. Napoleon Hill lists:

10 stimuli to which the human mind responds  most freely:

  1. The desire for sex expression
  2. Love
  3. A burning desire for fame, power, or financial gain, MONEY
  4. Music
  5. Friendship between either those of the same sex, or those of the opposite sex.
  6. A Master Mind alliance based upon the harmony of two or more people who ally themselves for spiritual or temporal advancement.
  7. Mutual suffering, such as that experienced by people who are persecuted.
  8. Auto-suggestion
  9. Fear
  10. Narcotics and alcohol.

These stimuli most effectively “stepup” the mind and lead to instant physical action. In a following excursus, Napoleon Hill talks about the Sixth Sense, a.k.a. Creative Imagination. He gives some examples of how the Sixth Sense works like when ideas or concepts flash into one’s mind.

  • An orator closes his eyes just before the climax of his oratory to speak through ideas which come to him from within.
  • An American Financier closes his eyes for two or three minutes before making a decision

Then Napoleon Hill presents the names of men. From their biographies he is sure to know, that all of them have been of a highly sexed nature and their source of power was transmuted sex energy.

  • GEORGE WASHINGTON
  • NAPOLEON BONAPARTE
  • WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
  • ABRAHAM LINCOLN
  • RALPH WALDO EMERSON
  • ROBERT BURNS
  • THOMAS JEFFERSON
  • ELBERT HUBBARD
  • ELBERT H. GARY
  • OSCAR WILDE
  • WOODROW WILSON
  • JOHN H. PATTERSON
  • ANDREW JACKSON
  • ENRICO CARUSO

“Widespread ignorance on the subject of sex is due to the fact that the subject has been surrounded with mystery and beclouded by dark silence.”
