Persistence is one of the cornerstones of the formula to get rich, described in “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. In the following you will find some statements and quotes from the chapter.

  • Combine will-power with desire and you will get an irresistible pair
  • Henry Ford followed through in all of his plans with persistence
  • Do not act like the majority of people who throw their aims and purposes overboard at the first sign of misfortune or opposition
  • The quality of “persistence” is to the character of man what carbon is to steel
  • “Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure.”
  • “The starting point of all achievement is desire.”
  • “Without persistence, you will be defeated, even before you start. With persistence you will win.”
  • “Be persistent no matter how slowly you may, at first, have to move.

As an example of sustainable persistence, Napoleon Hill tells the story of novelist Fannie Hurst. She received 36 rejection slips from one publisher alone. But she did not give up – and she succeeded. The movie-rights to her  novel “Great Laughter” (1936) brought $100,000.00, said to be the highest price ever paid for a story before publication.

Persistence is based upon definite causes, for example:

  • Definiteness of purpose
  • Desire
  • Self-Reliance
  • Definiteness of plans
  • Accurate knowledge
  • Co-operation
  • Will-power
  • Habit

Napoleon Hill then lists 16 symptoms of lack of persistence and 4 necessary steps to the habit of persistence. Again: Read the chapter (the entire book) yourself, work with it and grow rich with it.

This chapter of Napoleon Hill’s “Think And Grow Rich” is about one of the greatest moment in American History: The Declaration of Independence. Mr. Hill reports the previous events that had led to this exceptional document, signed by 56 fearless men who gave birth to a nation “destined to bring mankind forever, the privilege of making decisions.”

He claims, that decision and consequential action are crucial for success. Each of the 56 man who signed the Declaration of Independence knew one thing for sure: should the colonies lose the fight with Great Britain, which was sure to follow, they would have signed their own death warrant.

But as we know today, the 56 congress members had made their decision and kept at it regardless of any personal danger, so that on July 4, 1776, Thomas Jefferson “fearlessly read the most momentous decision ever placed upon paper.”

Please make sure to read this chapter of “Think And Grow Rich” yourself. Napoleon Hill’s style of  describing the ongoings from March 5, 1770 up to July 4, 1776, is both informative and beautiful. You can feel Mr. Hill’s love to his country and the respect he shows for the men who made it possible  in every single sentence.

Napoleon Hill strongly suggests to copy the following epigram in large letters and place it where you will see it daily:

“TELL THE WORLD WHAT YOU INTEND TO DO, BUT FIRST SHOW IT.”

This section is the most voluminous one in “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. It contains not less than 9 step-by-step action plans or checklists that deal with planning. Here is an overview of the different lists:

Surprisingly the Master Mind again

In this 6th step toward riches “Organized Planning”, Napoleon Hill also recalls the Master Mind Principle from chapter “Power of the Master Mind”. Napoleon Hill designs a simple plan to build a Master Mind Alliance. He writes in “Think And Grow Rich” (Organized Planning):

“(a) Ally yourself with a group of as many people as you may need for the creation, and carrying out of your plan, or plans for the accumulation of money-making use of the “Master Mind” principle described in a later chapter. (Compliance with this instruction is absolutely essential. Do not neglect it.)”

O.K., I am building a Master Mind Alliance right now.
I have already found one member to join my Master Mind Alliance.

Dr. Hill: “(b) Before forming your “Master Mind” alliance, decide what advantages, and benefits, you may offer the individual members of your group, in return for their cooperation. No one will work indefinitely without some form of compensation. No intelligent person will either request or expect another to work without adequate compensation, although this may not always be in the form of money.”

Fair enough. I can offer counseling, ideas and spirit.

Napoleon Hill: “(c) Arrange to meet with the members of your “Master Mind” group at least twice a week, and more often if possible, until you have jointly perfected the necessary plan, or plans for the accumulation of money.”

Honestly, that is a real big challenge to me. Perhaps talking over the phone or skype twice a week would do it. At least for the beginning?

Dr. Hill continues: “(d) Maintain PERFECT HARMONY between yourself and every member of your “Master Mind” group. If you fail to carry out this instruction to the letter, you may expect to meet with failure. The “Master Mind” principle cannot obtain where PERFECT HARMONY does not prevail.”

Hm… am I nice enough to maintain perfect harmony? Well, I’ll do my best.

At least, my Master Mind Alliance has started. I called my sister, told her about the Master Mind Principle and she was excited to join. She is so great. Now I have mailed her a copy of  “Think And Grow Rich” (your free copy top right) so she can read it herself.

Imagination is a crucial condition in Napoleon Hill’s formula of getting rich. He mentions 2 forms of imagination:

1. Synthetic Imagination

- occurs when old concepts, ideas or plans are arranged into new combinations

2. Creative Imagination

- is the form of imagination that helps create basic concepts or new ideas

Inaction can weaken one’s imagination but it never dies. Napoleon Hill emphasizes: “It can be revived and made alert through use.”

This chapter in Napoleon Hill’s book “Think And Grow Rich” contains 2 impressive examples of men who used their imagination to either get rich or raise money for a humanitarian project. Both of the stories are true.

The first one is titled: “The Enchanted Kettle” and narrates the very beginning of a product that today is known and available in almost every single country of the world. One man used his imagination to make this possible.

My favorite highlight of this chapter is the story of Dr. Gunsaulus who had to raise  1 million dollars and got the money within 36 hours after he reached a definitive decision in his mind to get it, and decided upon a definite plan for getting it. Read yourself. It’s amazing.

Napoleon Hill explains the different forms of knowledge:  general knowledge and specialized knowledge. He considers General Knowledge as “of but little use in the accumulation of money” – regardless of its quantity and variety.

Specialized Knowledge, on the other hand, applied in combination with imagination can lead to an unique and successful business. It is a way of getting rich. Napoleon Hill introduces a man who exactly did this and went from unemployment to his own prospering business.

What is Auto-Suggestion? In his book “Think And Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill explains:

“AUTO-SUGGESTION is a term which applies to all suggestions and all self-ad-ministered stimuli which reach one’s mind through the five senses. Stated in another way, auto-suggestion is self-suggestion.”

Napoleon Hill considers Auto-Suggestion as the most important part in his formula of getting rich. He states a simple but effective 3-Step-procedure that can be easily customized to one’s personal needs (see “Think And Grow Rich”, Chapter 4).

Napoleon Hill says in this chapter:

“You are now reading the chapter which represents the keystone to the arch of this philosophy. The instructions contained in this chapter must be understood and APPLIED WITH PERSISTENCE, if you succeed in transmuting desire into money.”

Great! Faith is a state of mind? Do I now earn money, get on,  make money, get on like a millionaire and get rich?

You can use your mind to switch FAITH on or to switch FAITH off. Your tool to do that is Auto-Suggestion. Switching faith on is easy. You simply think to yourself: “Now I will believe!”. That was the first part of the Auto-Suggestion, more will follow.  It will need some time to adjust your mind. Then you can experience your faith.

Tip: Read the chapter “Faith” in “Think And Grow Rich” yourself and learn how to develop or enhance faith. Nobody can explain it better to you than Dr. Napoleon Hill.  He himself was a millionaire out of his own strength. And he has interviewed more than 500 millionaires and multimillionaires at that time.

In his book “Think And Grow Rich” , Napoleon Hill calls Desire the first step toward riches. In this chapter he tells the story of Edwin C. Barnes, a man with “keen, pulsating DESIRE”. Edwin C. Barnes wanted a business association with Thomas A. Edison. He finally succeeded.

To transmute the desire for riches into cash, you need to know 6 definite, practical action steps:

  • 1. Fix in your mind the exact amount of money you desire.
  • 2. Determine exactly what you intend to give in return for the money you desire.
  • 3. Fix a definite date at which you intend to possess the desired amount of money.
  • 4. Create a definite plan and put it into action at once. Ready or not.
  • 5. Write out a clear, concise statement of the amount of money you intend to acquire. Name the precise time limit and what you intend to give in return for the money. Now describe clearly the plan through which you are going to accumulate it.
  • 6. Read your statement twice daily. Once before you sleep at night, once after you wake up in the morning. Napoleon Hill emphasizes: “AS YOU READ-SEE AND FEEL AND BELIEVE YOURSELF ALREADY IN POSSESSION OF THE MONEY.”

    • Yes, I have done it. I have bought a little Notebook and written out the amount of money, what I will give in return, the date when I will possess what I desire and, of course, a plan. The writing alone made things a lot clearer to me.

    Why don’t you try it yourself? If you are serious about Napoleon Hill, his book “Think And Grow Rich” and your desire to get rich, you may want to think twice to neglect it. It was a great experience to me. Perhaps, it’s the same for you.
